Chinese Christian Church of Greater Washington at Clarksburg

历史 History

The Chinese Christian Church was the first church founded from a Bible Study group in this area.  In 1957, Ted Choy and a few Chinese foreign students began to meet for Bible studies in the office of International Students, Inc. in Calvert Street in Washington, D.C. The first Sunday worship service in Mandarin was onAugust 31, 1958, with about twenty Chinese Christians in attendance. With growth came a move to larger facilities at 5709 16th Street, N.W. The church was officially incorporated as “Chinese Mandarin Church” with Rev. Moses Chow as the first pastor.  Our church is a non-denominational protestant church, basing our faith and conduct on the teachings of the Bible, financially independent, trusting in the rich provision of the Lord and the free will offerings of our members.

As church attendance continued to grow, a building program was established in 1969 under Pastor Fred Cheung. The Piney Branch Road location was purchased, and the sanctuary building was completed in March 1971. The church was renamed as “Chinese Christian Church of Greater Washington, D.C.” .   In the following half century, we were blessed by the ministries of several pastors, and we held firm the truth from the Bible, and set the purpose of our church to be “biblical, prayerful, unified, and sending”.  Our members were of one mind spreading the gospel and leading people to Christ. Since 1972, we have conducted annual Missions Conferences to promote and to support overseas missions by action and with finance.  We send out adults and youth as short term missionaries to Europe and Asia to minister and to learn.  Regarding local ministries, three years ago the church established a branch church at Clarksburg, Maryland.  Regular attendance (including children) is forty some people.  Recently we added a ministry focused on Chinese foreign students.  We provide airport pickups and arrange for temporary housing.  We provide weekly transportation to our fellowship meetings and Sunday worships.  We welcome present or future new students to contact us.

This year, 2011, we experienced special blessings from the Lord.  The two houses next to our church went on the market.  They were perfect for our church expansion. After much prayer, we felt the leading of the Lord to acquire the properties.  The Official Board made the proposal, with very strong support from the congregation.  The financing was by “promissory notes” to our members and not through bank loans.  This purchase testifies to the grace of God, and our members’ faith and commitment to and love of our church.

With the recent departure of our senior pastor James Sun, the church ministry is jointly served by our Associate Pastor Eugene Schamko, three elders ( George Chang, Mark Ho, and K.C. Leung) and the youth minister Jason Wang, together with 11 deacons and their co-workers. Our church is diligently searching for a new pastor. May the Lord move His chosen one to come and serve our church.

Brother Stanley Chan and Daniel Wu were trained and mentored by Elder Board in past years.  They were found qualify and met Church Elder requirements.  They were tested and passed the Elder examination, confirmed by congregation, and ordinated as Elders in Feb 2012. May the Lord use all our Elders in enlarging God’s kingdom!

Youth Minister, Jason Wang, resigned and moved to serve in TX in March 2012.  He and his wife, Julia, are closer to their families while expecting their first child.  Official Board appointed a Search Committee in searching for a new youth minister.

We have many elements in our ministry.  In addition to Chinese and English worships, we have Teens ministry, children ministry, overseas students ministry, Sunday school, choir, library, nursery, and tens of fellowship groups and prayer meetings.  We welcome believers to join in our ministry, and we especially welcome those who want to come to hear the gospel, to learn the truth, and to know Jesus Christ.
